Sherrie Walter lost her ear to cancer two years ago. But doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, offered Walter a chance at a new ear — a permanent one built from her own tissue. The groundbreaking procedure, described as one of the most complicated ear constructions in the U.S., involves removing cartilage from the rib cage to form a new ear, which is then placed under the skin of the forearm to grow. via
THAT’S RAD. WOW.
like for real we can grow new things on different parts of our bodies to later be attached to their rightful places, we can put pieces of skull in our tummies for safe keepin’ until the swelling from a head injury subsides, we can PRINT FUNCTIONING ORGANS
what an age we live in
The sick kids hospital gave me this (to remove cartilage from my rib cage and “grow” a new ear) option for my microtia in 2006 (maybe?), so these procedures have been around for a little bit now! …but yes, technology is fucking rad.
